ADOPTING A GRATEFUL DOG
We are so excited to hear you are considering adopting a Grateful Dog! Thank you for helping us in our efforts to save these beautiful dogs and give them a chance at a new forever life. Without your support, we would not be able to carryout our daily operations and save so many lives.
THE ADOPTION PROCESS
Step 1: Fill out an adoption application
Please be DETAILED. We will not respond to an incomplete application lacking the important details we need. Please also be patient as we are a small organization consisting of dedicated and dog loving volunteers who are helping on their free time to save lives and complete families. While we try to be as responsive as possible, it can take up to 3-5 days to receive an update on your application. If your application is approved and your references are cleared, a representative will reach out to you regarding the required next steps.*
Step 2: Reference Checks & Home Visit
This is a vital step to our process. We will check 3 non-family references, as well as a veterinary reference. Once this step is completed, we will move forward with the virtual tour home visit. Please be sure to let your references know to expect either a phone call, or keep an eye out in their emails. We will not accept any applications noting "references will be provided upon request." If you are filling out the application, that is our request, and we are unable to move forward with the process without them.
Step 3: Collect Drivers Licenses of Adopters
We will keep the drivers licenses of both the main adopter, as well as any co-adopters, if applicable. This is to verify the identity and address of our adopters to ensure safety for our pups. Please be prepared to send a copy of your drivers license, as well as a video tour of your home once requested.
Step 4: Communicate with Foster & Set up a Meet and Greet
Once you are approved to adopt, and have completed the above steps, we will then put you in touch with the foster family of the dog you are interested in adopting. Please be prepared to adopt if you are applying! We do not hold dogs for any period of time. Get your questions ready and be as prepared as possible for the meet and greet.
Step 5: ADOPT!
Once you have communicated with the foster family and you have set up a meet and greet, it is important to remember that you are expected to adopt on the day of the meet and greet, as long as everything goes well. When we receive confirmation of a meet and greet, we will send along the adoption paperwork, which is signed electronically and must be filled out before the dog leaves the fosters possession. While we understand adopting a dog is a big commitment, you should be well informed and communicated with by the time you meet the dog.
Foster To Adopt*:
*We DO NOT offer foster to adopt trials with any dogs already in our northern program.*
This is ONLY offered for dogs that have not come north to New England.
In the event that you are participating in a foster-to-adopt trial with a new dog from TGD, you must agree to the foster AND adoption contracts.
Foster to adopt trials have been very successful for our adopters wanting to bring home dogs or puppies from out of state. The trial decreases the amount of times the dog is bounced around from foster to adoptive home once they arrive in Maine, therefore decreasing added stress from multiple changes in environments. This also allows our rescue to follow the quarantine guidelines required by the state of Maine.
Foster to adopt trials are offered in 3 day, or 6 day increments.
Any dogs eligible for the foster to adopt program have been thoroughly temperament tested and considered by both our northern and southern team.
Please check out our
for more information.
*Please note that due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond to applicants who do not pass our requirements. We will only be able to respond to applications we move forward with. If you are curious as to the status of your application, please send an email to:
firstname.lastname@example.org and we will do our best to assist you*
